When people think of the European Union, what often comes to mind are institutional summits, international treaties, or acronyms that are hard to remember. Yet behind the institutions of Brussels and Strasbourg lies a system of programmes, rights, and tools designed specifically for young people: students, recent graduates, apprentices, and workers under the age of 30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the freedom to study abroad on an Erasmus grant, to the chance to look for work in any Member State without visas or permits, to European funds that finance youth start-ups and educational projects \u2014 Europe offers a network of opportunities that we often don\u2019t know enough about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEurope is not just made of rules and bureaucracy: it is made of people, exchanges, and experiences. It\u2019s up to us young people to make the most of it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

ERASMUS+: MUCH MORE THAN A SEMESTER ABROAD<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Erasmus programme was launched in 1987 to promote university mobility across Europe. Today, in its updated form as Erasmus+, it has become the world\u2019s largest education, training, and sport programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a budget of over \u20ac26 billion for the period 2021\u20132027,  it funds not only university students, but also secondary school pupils, apprentices, volunteers and teachers. The figures speak for themselves: since 1987, over 13 million people have taken part in the programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who is eligible to apply?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Access to Erasmus+ is not restricted to university students alone. The main categories include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022University students (mobility periods of 2 to 12 months)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022Secondary school students (Erasmus+ School Education programme)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022Young workers and apprentices (Erasmus+ VET \u2013 Vocational Education and Training)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022Volunteers aged 17 to 30 (European Solidarity Corps)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022Teachers and trainers wishing to undertake professional development abroad<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How does the scholarship work?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The grant partially covers living and accommodation costs abroad. The amount varies depending on the destination country and the student\u2019s family income (those with a lower income receive an additional grant ). Credits earned abroad are automatically recognised through the ECTS (European Credit Transfer System). According to the European Commission, 40% of participants find their first job thanks to the contacts made during their time abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Working in Europe: rights and opportunities<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the fundamental pillars of the European Union is the free movement of workers. Every European citizen has the right to seek employment and reside in any Member State without special permits. This is a well-established right, enshrined in the European Treaties, which also applies to young people at the start of their working lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

EURES: the European job portal<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Few people know it, but EURES (European Employment Services) is the EU\u2019s official job-search portal. It lists over 4 million job vacancies across 31 countries and is completely free to use. EURES advisers, who are also based at Italian job centres, help young people navigate the European labour market, have their professional qualifications recognised, and understand local regulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Youth Guarantee<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Youth Guarantee programme is a European initiative that commits Member States to offering unemployed people under the age of 30 a concrete opportunity \u2014 a job,an internship or a training couse \u2014 within four months of finishing their studies or losing their job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Italy, the programme is managed through the job Centres and offers incentives to companies that hire young people, as well as extracurricular internships and vocational training  couses funded with European resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite these opportunities, challenges remain. Youth unemployment is still a structural problem across the EU: according to 2025 Eurostat data, the European average stands at around 14%, with peaks exceeding 25% in some Southern European countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, access to transport is not yet evenly distributed: those from outlying areas or less well-off families benefit from it to a lesser extent. For this reason, the European Commission has recently increased funding for inclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Europe is us: participation is a choice<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The European Union is a project in constant evolution. Knowing your rights, keeping up to date with programmes and taking part in democratic life \u2014 even if only by voting \u2014 are choices that every young person can make. Europe is not an abstract entity: it is the grant that changes a life, or the portal that helps you find a job in Berlin.  It\u2019s up to us to decide whether to embrace it as an opportunity or dismiss it as something far away.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Quando si parla di Unione Europea, l’immaginazione corre spesso a vertici istituzionali, trattati internazionali o sigle difficili da ricordare. Eppure, dietro alle istituzioni di Bruxelles e Strasburgo, esiste un sistema di programmi, diritti e strumenti pensati proprio per i giovani: studenti, neolaureati, apprendisti, lavoratori under 30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dalla libert\u00e0 di studiare all’estero con una borsa di studio Erasmus, alla possibilit\u00e0 di cercare lavoro in qualsiasi Paese membro senza visti n\u00e9 permessi, fino ai fondi europei che finanziano startup giovanili e progetti educativi: l’Europa offre una rete di opportunit\u00e0 che spesso non conosciamo abbastanza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ERASMUS+:MOLTO PI\u00d9 DI UN SEMESTRE ALL\u2019ESTERO<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il programma Erasmus \u00e8 nato nel 1987 con l’obiettivo di favorire la mobilit\u00e0 universitaria in Europa. Oggi, nella sua versione aggiornata Erasmus+, \u00e8 diventato il pi\u00f9 grande programma di istruzione, formazione e sport al mondo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Con un budget di oltre 26 miliardi di euro per il periodo 2021-2027, finanzia non solo gli universitari, ma anche studenti delle scuole superiori, apprendisti, volontari e insegnanti. I numeri parlano chiaro: dal 1987 ad oggi, oltre 13 milioni di persone hanno partecipato al programma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chi pu\u00f2 partecipare?<\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

L’accesso a Erasmus+ non \u00e8 riservato solo a chi studia all’universit\u00e0. Tra le principali categorie:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 Studenti universitari (mobilit\u00e0 da 2 a 12 mesi)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 Studenti delle scuole superiori (programma Erasmus+ School Education)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 Giovani lavoratori e apprendisti (Erasmus+ VET \u2013 Istruzione e Formazione Professionale)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 Volontari tra i 17 e i 30 anni (Corpo Europeo di Solidariet\u00e0)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 Insegnanti e formatori che vogliono aggiornarsi all’estero<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Come funziona la borsa di studio?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il contributo copre parzialmente i costi di vitto e alloggio all’estero. L’importo varia in base al Paese di destinazione e al reddito familiare dello studente (chi ha un ISEE basso riceve un contributo aggiuntivo). I crediti ottenuti all\u2019estero vengono riconosciuti automaticamente grazie al sistema ECTS (European Credit Transfer System). Secondo la Commissione Europea, il 40% dei partecipanti trova il primo lavoro grazie ai contatti presi durante il periodo all\u2019estero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lavorare in Europa: diritti e opportunit\u00e0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Uno dei pilastri fondamentali dell’Unione Europea \u00e8 la libera circolazione dei lavoratori. Ogni cittadino europeo ha il diritto di cercare occupazione e risiedere in qualsiasi Paese membro senza permessi speciali. Si tratta di un diritto acquisito, sancito dai Trattati europei, che vale anche per i giovani alla prima esperienza lavorativa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

EURES: il portale europeo per il lavoro<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pochi lo conoscono, ma EURES (European Employment Services) \u00e8 il portale ufficiale dell’UE per la ricerca di lavoro in Europa. Contiene oltre 4 milioni di offerte di lavoro in 31 Paesi ed \u00e8 completamente gratuito. I consiglieri EURES, presenti anche nei centri per l’impiego italiani, aiutano i giovani a orientarsi nel mercato del lavoro europeo, a riconoscere le qualifiche professionali e a comprendere le normative locali.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Garanzia Giovani<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il programma Garanzia Giovani (Youth Guarantee)\u00e8 un’iniziativa europea che impegna i Paesi membri a offrire agli under 30 disoccupati un’opportunit\u00e0 concreta (lavoro, tirocinio o formazione) entro quattro mesi dalla fine degli studi o dalla perdita del lavoro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Italia, il programma \u00e8 gestito attraverso i Centri per l’Impiego e offre incentivi alle aziende che assumono giovani, oltre a tirocini extracurriculari e percorsi di formazione professionale finanziati con fondi europei.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nonostante le opportunit\u00e0, le difficolt\u00e0 non mancano. La disoccupazione giovanile resta un problema strutturale dell’Unione: secondo i dati Eurostat del 2025, la media europea si attesta intorno al 14%, con picchi che superano il 25% in alcuni Paesi del Sud Europa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inoltre, l’accesso alla mobilit\u00e0 non \u00e8 ancora equamente distribuito: chi proviene da aree periferiche o famiglie meno abbienti partecipa meno. Per questo, la Commissione Europea ha recentemente aumentato i fondi destinati all\u2019inclusione.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L’Europa siamo noi: partecipare \u00e8 una scelta<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

L’Unione Europea \u00e8 un progetto in continua evoluzione. Conoscere i propri diritti, informarsi sui programmi e partecipare alla vita democratica \u2013 anche solo votando \u2013 sono scelte che ogni giovane pu\u00f2 fare. L’Europa non \u00e8 un’entit\u00e0 astratta: \u00e8 la borsa di studio che cambia una vita o il portale che ti aiuta a trovare lavoro a Berlino. Sta a noi scegliere se viverla come uno spazio di opportunit\u00e0 o ignorarla come qualcosa di distante.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
